D/FW Ferrari Club of America2002 Karting Challenge |
Round 1: September 24, 2002Round 1 of the DFW/FCA Karting Challenge was quite a bit of fun. After some preliminary adult beverages and some tire kicking, the races started with 11 participants.
![]() From left: Francis, Don, Wes (barely), Tillman, Chris, Jim S., Jim E., Rob, Greg, Ken, Mark The first preliminary heat was held on the short track, which is a very technical track that favors handling over top speed. The race was a tightly contested, with 2nd through 5 separated by only .76 of a second. However, the winner was Jim Schad, who smashed the rest of the field by almost a second. He was greeted by his enthusiastically cheering fan club. The second heat showed a little more spacing in the final results. It was held on the longer track, which tends to separate people more than the shorter track. Wes and Jim S. took the top spots, with Jim E. and Ken separated by only .03 seconds for 3rd and 4th. The Main Event was run on the long course, with a Gran-Prix start. The light flashed red, red, re-re-r-ee-d-d-rr-e-e-e-d, green! 11 carts roared (well, whooshed) into the first turn, and all heck broke loose. There's not really room to go three wide through that turn, but I know it was done...by most of the pack! In the end, Rob's famous road racing skills paid off, and he took the win with a best time of 36.48. Jim E. came in second, with a time of 37.03, and Ken followed with a 37.06. Rob, Jim and Ken took home the fabulous prizes, and Jim S. left with the points lead.
